HISTORY HEPEATS ITSELF. How to tell and preserve immigrant women’s stories?

Kvennasögusafn (The Women’s History Archives) will host a workshop for women of foreign origin in Iceland on Saturday, November 7th, 10:00-12:30.

The history of mankind is exactly that; very focused on the “man” in “mankind”. This is especially prevalent when it comes to immigrant women, who often are unseen, unheard and unmentioned in the history books. In Iceland, the stories of immigrant women have historically been obscured by oppressive actions, such as forcing immigrants to adopt an Icelandic name and the focus on assimilation, rather than integration.

How does the knowledge of the past affect our present as immigrant women? How are our stories from the past told? How do we want them to be told? How can we tell our stories in a time of growing backlash on immigrants’ rights?

The workshop will be held at the National and University Library of Iceland, Arngrímsgata 3, 107 Reykjavík. The workshop is intended for immigrant women (trans and cis), non-binary immigrants, second generation, historians and other experts from the GLAM sector (Galleries, Libraries, Archives and Museums). The workshop will be held in English, with flexibility for Icelandic, and other languages as needed with informal translations.

Rakel Adolphsdóttir, project manager of Kvennasögusafn
